The weather and atmosphere could not have been more ideal for NASA Southeast’s Savannah Sizzler which took place September 1st-3rd 2023. A total of 10 Spec E9X builds were in attendance as this was the largest official NASA event for the SE9X drivers to date.
Two of the Florida region’s SE9X racers made the tow north to join the southeastern crew for a weekend full of track action and good times. A couple of drivers came down from the mid-Atlantic region, and most were from the NASA Southeast region. Many of the guys had been in touch with each other via social media, forums, and group chats for a couple of years now but some had yet to meet until this event. “It was great to finally put some faces to the names,” said Florida Region’s Carlos Mendez. “Everyone seemed really stoked on getting a big group of these cars together on track for the first time”.

Throughout the weekend the guys talked shop and tested their SE9X builds on the race track. The cars looked great and performed even better. No major issues were encountered and everyone was able to use their track time to test their new builds and improve as drivers. All of the builds seemed to be progressing very well and most of the cars in attendance are close to their final Spec E9X racing form.

One great thing to see within this new class is how it has been appealing to people of all ages. The age range for progressing builds ranges from high school students in HPDE to experienced racers who have been racing for over ten years, which proves how accessible these cars are for grassroots motorsports. With cars being plentiful and cheap and the same being true for parts, Spec E9X captures the spirit of spec racing by utilizing a modern and exciting BMW platform.

The next event for Spec E9X will be in the Florida Region on December 15-17 at Sebring International Raceway. Here NASA Florida will be teaming up with FARA for a joint event. This is sure to be another well-attended event and it is sure to be another great weekend given how beautiful the weather and track conditions can be in Florida at that time of year.
